Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston merge to form General Electric Company, which lists on the New York Stock Exchange and becomes one of the twelve original Dow components four years later.
GE builds the I-A, the first jet engine made in the United States, beginning the aviation business that eventually becomes the whole company.
H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. becomes the first chief executive hired from outside GE, inheriting a balance sheet the company spends the next several years shrinking.
GE announces it will separate into three public companies covering aviation, healthcare and energy, ending the conglomerate.
