Australia's First Eight-Hour Battery Is 144 Four-Hour Megapacks Capped at 50 MW

Tesla gave one number for Limondale: 144 Megapacks. AEMO's register gives 50 MW and 400 MWh. The eight hours come from the export cap, not the batteries.

On 18 September the Tesla Megapack account called Limondale, NSW "Australia's first 8-hour long-duration battery," built by RWE from 144 Tesla Megapacks that "charge 2x faster than discharge." Its only number. AEMO's register carries the site at 50 MW and 400 MWh — 400 ÷ 50 is 8.00 hours, and no other in-service battery on it reaches six.

True of the plant as RWE registered it; not of the batteries. On the four-hour Megapack 2 XL configuration Tesla publishes, 144 packs come to roughly 141 MW and 555–600 MWh, and 563.9 over 141 is four hours flat. RWE capped export at 50 MW, about 35% of that, and the eight hours follow. The 2x is that cap from the charging side: 100 MW in, per RWE and NSW, a rating the register does not carry, along with about 29% of the installed energy.

Nothing happened this week. AEMO and Transgrid cleared full operations on 27 May, NSW cut the ribbon on 11 June, and the pack count has been RWE's since September 2025 — sixteen weeks of product PR behind a plant already dispatching, under four days of a 13.5 GWh quarter.
