On 15 September Oracle said it is investing in ten Texas wind projects "delivering more than 1.7 gigawatts" to ERCOT, the grid that powers its Abilene AI data centre. That is rated capacity. On Oracle's own figures the projects average about 629 MW, 37% of it, and a year of that output is slightly more energy than Oracle reported using across its whole business in fiscal 2025.
Oracle gives the energy only as an equivalence: enough each year for "over 525,000 U.S. homes". At EIA's 10,500 kWh a household, 525,000 × 10,500 kWh = 5.51 TWh a year, and 5.51 TWh ÷ 8,760 hours = 629 MW. Oracle does not name its household factor. EPA's equivalencies calculator uses 12,194 kWh, which would make it 6.40 TWh. The emissions figure sides with the lower number: 1.8 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided a year, at eGRID's 2023 ERCOT rate of 733.9 lb/MWh, backs out to 5.41 TWh.
The wind would out-produce Oracle's fiscal 2025 footprint by 5% to 24%
Oracle's fiscal 2025 datasheet, for the year to 31 May 2025 across offices and cloud data centres, reports 5.16 TWh of total energy use, up 32% on the year before. Against the three conversions above, the wind comes to 105%, 107% or 124% of it. That year closed before the AI build reached Abilene: Crusoe, which built the campus, says Oracle began delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks there in June 2025.
Abilene alone is sized in gigawatts. Crusoe and Lancium give the eight-building campus a 1.2 GW grid interconnection. Drawn flat out for a year, 1.2 GW × 8,760 hours = 10.5 TWh, twice Oracle's fiscal 2025 total, and 629 MW matches 52% of it. No campus runs at its connection limit every hour: at 80% utilisation the wind matches 66%, at 60% it matches 87%. Oracle has not published Abilene's consumption, and its "current AI data centers in Texas" may be more than one site.
Oracle's 91% renewable is an annual certificate count
The datasheet puts fiscal 2025 renewable coverage at 91% of electricity: 92% in the cloud, 85% in offices and facilities. Oracle's renewable energy guidance says those claims are "substantiated using certificates", retired against consumption over a reporting period that is "usually annually". Its Scope 2 emissions show what that does to the number: 1.60 million tonnes at the average mix of the grids it drew from, 0.24 million after certificates.
The Texas release uses the same accounting. It promises "100 percent carbon-free electricity matching" and never says hourly, so a year of wind can match a year of data-centre use while Abilene draws ERCOT's mix in still hours. Oracle has also split its target. Its environmental goals keep offices and public cloud at 100% carbon-free and give "Oracle Custom AI Data Centers", including clusters built for a single customer, until 2035, through solar and wind contracts with nuclear and storage under study.
Oracle's case for the deal is in its own figures: 1.8 million tonnes avoided a year exceeds the 1.60 million tonnes of location-based emissions from all the electricity it used in fiscal 2025.
The around-the-clock capacity runs on fuel
Abilene's backup is GE Vernova natural gas turbines, per Oracle's Abilene page. VoltaGrid is deploying 2,300 MW for Oracle's AI data centres, supplied with natural gas through Energy Transfer's pipelines, at sites neither company has named. Bloom Energy has 1.2 GW of fuel cells contracted for Oracle's US projects, under an agreement for up to 2.8 GW; Bloom's cells run on natural gas, biogas or hydrogen, and its release does not say which.
Megawatt for megawatt, those contracts are not comparable with the wind. An engine or fuel cell can hold its rating in any hour it has fuel, while 1.7 GW of wind averages 629 MW and can deliver next to nothing on a still night.
If Oracle publishes an annual generation figure for the ten projects below 5.16 TWh, the comparison with its fiscal 2025 footprint falls; the avoided-emissions figure it already published points above it.
