What we learned
- The efficiency thesis cleared its checkpoint at 2.3x. Adjusted operating income +57% against gross profit +25% , adjusted EPS +65% , and a record 27% adjusted operating margin on gross profit.
- Guidance rose on all three lines, which is the stronger version of passing: gross profit to $12.51B , adjusted operating income to $3.47B , adjusted EPS growth to 70%.
- A company growing operating income 57% scores in the twenties, and the business is not the problem. Block has sat between 4 and 25 on our definition for a year, and the growth half of this quarter is 9.35% .
- The denominator is bitcoin. Cash App bitcoin sales are recognised gross — the entire proceeds through revenue against a cost of revenue that is nearly all of it, at roughly a two percent gross margin, large enough to dominate the total.
- Everything Block actually monetises sits in the gap between revenue and cost of revenue, which is why total net revenue grew 9.4% while gross profit grew 25% — and why the gross-margin series has done nothing but climb.
